Elevating Education through Sustainability and Community Engagement

The Le Vau Educational Pavilion in Paris, a testament to sustainable architecture and community involvement, has emerged as a transformative space within a school complex in the 20th arrondissement. Crafted from wood and rammed earth, this project by L’Atelier Senzu addresses key challenges in educational architecture, focusing on reception, pedagogy, community integration, and the vital need for sustainable construction practices.

Initiative and Collaboration

The initiative materialized through collaborative efforts, blending the OASIS program’s commitment to green schoolyards with insights from the participatory budget of the City of Paris. The teaching team at Le Vau school played a crucial role by identifying a need to reshape perceptions and foster parental engagement actively. The pavilion, conceived as a welcoming space, aimed to bridge the gap between the school and the neighborhood.

OASIS Program Influence

The OASIS program, dedicated to transforming schoolyards into vibrant and green spaces, inspired the idea of creating an innovative educational space within the school courtyard. Witnessing the success of the program in converting vacant areas into interactive hubs, the Le Vau school group envisioned a circular room to serve as an inclusive and collaborative environment.

Holistic Approach to Design

L’Atelier Senzu approached the project with a holistic mindset, integrating functionality, community connections, and sustainability. Departing from conventional rectangular structures, the circular design promotes inclusivity, fostering diverse arrangements within the space. Drawing inspiration from carousels or cabins, the facade rejects hierarchy, embracing an all-encompassing design philosophy..

Rammed Earth Innovation

The choice of rammed earth as a primary material reflects its structural integrity, thermal properties, and aesthetic appeal. This project proudly claims to be the first load-bearing rammed earth building in Paris, showcasing a commitment to geosourced, biosourced, and decarbonized materials.

A Symbol of Welcome and Innovation

The Le Vau Educational Pavilion, with its circular shape, strategic location, and innovative use of materials, emerges not only as a welcoming haven for children and parents but also as a source of inspiration for educators. It stands as a tangible contribution to climate goals, setting a precedent for sustainable educational spaces for generations to come.
