Innovative Research Facility: Ecotron IleDeFrance

Innovative Research Facility: Ecotron IleDeFrance
  • Published

Atelier Tequi Architects spearheaded the design of the Ecotron IleDeFrance technical platform, offering state-of-the-art “Ecolabs” to the research community for handling ecological systems under controlled conditions. Commissioned for CNRS and ENS research, this facility occupies a site surrounded by pristine natural landscapes, necessitating a harmonious integration of architecture with its environment.

Architectural Design

The architectural treatment emphasizes a wooden structural statement, with vertical elements alternating between opaque and glazed areas to impart rhythm to the facade. Thick heat-treated Douglas fir cladding with visible slats contrasts with the verticality of the structure, ensuring durability and aesthetic appeal.

Sustainable Features

Joinery features extruded aluminum thermal break fittings, while exterior blinds with adjustable slats provide solar protection and privacy. The building incorporates a wood-burning boiler for hot water and heating, aligning with sustainability goals while maintaining functionality.

Integration with Environment

Set in a natural environment away from urban noise, wood is optimally utilized to minimize the ecological footprint and enhance blending with surroundings. The design prioritizes sobriety in material and energy use, avoiding unnecessary complexity while ensuring openness, generosity, and luminosity in spatial organization.

Functional Layout

A simple architectural approach guides the layout, ensuring clarity and functionality. The building’s design serves its primary purpose as a research facility without compromising on aesthetics or environmental considerations.

The Ecotron IleDeFrance stands as a testament to architectural ingenuity, seamlessly blending innovative design with environmental consciousness to create a space conducive to groundbreaking research in ecological sciences.
