Transformative Spaces: Aguas Nuevas School

Redefining Learning Spaces

In the quaint village of Aguas Nuevas, just a short distance from Albacete, an innovative addition to the existing nursery school stands as a testament to thoughtful architecture. Crafted by Iterare arquitectos, this distinctive work seamlessly integrates with the surroundings, offering a new dimension to the learning environment.

Harmonious Composition: Architectural Elements

The design of the annex, nestled within the village built by the Spanish National Institute of Colonization in the 1960s, is dictated by its functional requirements. Comprising only two volumes, the first, narrow and elongated, links to the existing structure, accommodating entrance and service areas. The second, a primary volume, stands tall, dedicated solely to providing children with a unique space for their activities.

Spatial Significance: The Engaging Classroom

The classroom, positioned setback from the façade line, emerges as the focal point of the project. Nestled between two courtyards—one at the rear for play and another at the front opening onto the street—the space is strategically located. Its remarkable height adds prominence to the interior volume, flooded with natural light. The large windows capture the dynamic interplay of shadows throughout the day, creating an environment where children can engage in their activities while being attuned to the evolving patterns of sunlight.

Facade Dynamics: A Welcoming Public Space

Beyond its educational role, the building contributes to the community fabric. In compliance with setback regulations, the façade creates a new seating area for village residents. This public bench becomes a gathering spot, offering a space for passersby to rest and parents to wait for their children. It not only addresses functional needs but also extends a welcoming gesture to the community.

Aguas Nuevas School by Iterare arquitectos stands as a harmonious blend of form and function, creating an environment where architecture seamlessly integrates with the learning journey of the children and fosters community interaction.
