The Arches Apartment, designed by Ana Sawaia Arquitetura in collaboration with Estúdio Paulo Alves, stands as a testament to timeless modernist architecture in São Paulo. This renovation project breathes new life into a historic building, celebrating its structural ingenuity while adapting it to contemporary living.
Celebrating Structural Brilliance
At the heart of the Arches Apartment lies a remarkable feat of engineering from architect Miguel Juliano, conceived over 50 years ago. The innovative use of arched concrete slabs not only eliminates the need for interior pillars but also facilitates rapid construction, reminiscent of Roman aqueducts. These graceful arches define the space, creating a sense of openness and fluidity throughout the building.
Embracing Modern Living
In the renovation process, the design team aimed to preserve the integrity of the original architecture while accommodating the needs of a modern family. Walls were removed to merge spaces, creating a cohesive social area conducive to family gatherings and entertainment. The application of polymeric cement over existing floorings streamlined construction while maintaining a consistent aesthetic.
Harmonizing Tradition with Innovation
Careful attention was paid to preserving the character of the original structure, with reclaimed wooden flooring and modular decks adding warmth and texture to the space. Lighting solutions were strategically integrated, utilizing the natural curves of the vaulted ceilings to enhance illumination while minimizing the need for intrusive fixtures.
Honoring the Past, Embracing the Future
In reimagining the Arches Apartment, the design team sought to honor the legacy of modernist architecture while meeting the demands of contemporary living. By embracing the building’s structural brilliance and enhancing it with modern amenities, they have created a space that is both timeless and forward-thinking—a true testament to the enduring appeal of thoughtful design.
